If the government ran it then expect it to be staffed with thousands of DEI appointments; a full department making sure no one is offended, that the right iwi protocols are observed, that trans ideology is rammed in, co-governance and treaty compliance workshops for staff and customers, net zero aligned, and rainbow flags flying outside, etc....oh and everyone will 'work' from home.

Peter, disappointed that you actually believed Peter’s, the inveterate liar , and once gave him your vote.

Never forget it was Peter’s and the bloviating buffoon Jones who, in Ardern’s cabinet fell over themselves to vote to destroy our oil and gas exploration industry to keep their selfish baubles of office.

Peters, today in an unbelievable brain fart has confirmed what a fiscal, intellectual Pygmy he is when ascertaining he can buy the BNZ for a quarter of what the market says it is worth.

Peters will say whatever his gullible followers want to hear to keep their selfish baubles

of office.

With Winston Peters it is Peters FIRST - New Zealand LAST.

Im starting to agree with you John re: NZF. Been a follower for a long time but with Shane Jones in the mix now who is very pro his iwi mates especially up north they are losing the plot. Maybe iwi want a bank & it named after them in some un pronouncable name. :o(

I heard Hosking ask the PM about it - he considered the idea laughably bad. As he said, why would he borrow $30B to buy something that isn’t required by the NZ Govt?

The pair debated other things but on that they agree.

Expect other differences between coalition partners to emerge as the elections loom; it’s politics.

There really is absolutely no one to vote for in November, I hang my head in despair

I cast my first vote in 1966, probably for Labour as we were a Labour household — or had been until Nordmeyer's Black Budget in 1958 caused my father to ditch them forever.

Like Peter, I've shopped around since then, with one constant — I've always voted.

The right to vote was too hard won to treat it with anything but respect. I copped Gilbert as a name from an uncle who died in North Africa in 1941 . . . if I didn't vote, I'd be letting him and his mates down.

And don't let perfect get in the way of good. There is no way you will ever come across a party that absolutely aligns with your thinking on every proposition. The party members and the MPs aren't all thinking alike . . . they argue their side and accept the majority's point of view.

As voters, we have to do the same.

If you're really cynical, pick the least worse.

But vote.

Agree, great advice there. I was 9 when the Black Budget of 1958 came out. I vaguely remember my parents discussing it with evident disgust; my father was a farmer who had fought in Greece and North Africa, and finally in Italy (four years in total); politicians were not respected much, and certainly not that era of Labour.

However, a failure to vote at all is to me disrespectful of the efforts of that generation.

I do concur, will vote for the party I least despise… tough one though as they are all found wanting on policy and integrity..

The problem with NZ First is that while it has pivoted hard into the nationalist bent (which is good), Winston conflates nationalism with the government needing to buy up the economy and make it publicly owned. We need better controls on the private market but government ownership never works well.

Well, that's the end of my NZF vote! Now who's left? I have no idea who to give my vote to in November.... :-(

I was once with Kiwibank and when I moved to Coromandel they closed their bank here but they put in an ATM where you could take out funds but not put any in ? How they expected to keep my account I do not know.

As I already had an account with ANZ I just went there but again no ANZ in Coromandel but with internet banking now no problem, At 81 I had to learn . In MY DAY WE DIDN'T EVEN HAVE CALCULATERS. NOW COMPUTERS.

But ANZ last month gave me 41 cents interest on $8300.00 so I am now looking for a system whereby I am treated better. Yes I made one withdrawal and did not replace it before the end of the month BUT SERIOUS SAVER , I question the use of those words ?

Govts should just stick to their knitting and start doing what they promised, bring on a referendum.

because they have lied to us and November will tell them what the elephant in the room they did not see

Let us not forget that the establishment of Kiwibank was at the insistence of Jim Anderton. After the 1999 election Labour (under Helen Clark) formed a Government with a coalition with the Alliance (under Jim Anderton) and this was one of the negotiated results.

While the banking industry in NZ was dominated by Australian-owned banks (and still is) there was a significant number of smaller NZ-owned banks. Kiwibank was not needed then and struggles to compete with the dominant players because it cannot meet Reserve Bank capital requirements required to do so.

If Helen Clark had been more committed to Kiwibank, her government would have ensured it had the scale required to handle the Government's banking needs. It did not, so we have the spectacle of a Government setting up a new bank then continuing to use an existing competitor.

So, who are you going to vote for this time Peter?

Theres a reason that Winston's been in and out of govt

Could this be another lifeline for Hipkins 😒

Can you imagine if the government took over a large successful aggressively competitive organisation, what social policy and NZs excellent track record of nepotism would lower performance and its' value to......

Philip Hornblow's avatar

Exactly why he should not get any real say in policies if he is in government again

Winston Peters should ride of into the sunset. Act makes the most sense among all prospective NZ political parties right now... National next best but spoiled by cowardice among several ministers and MPs. The comment that NZ First should be renamed "WP" First is spot on.
