Ani is always well informed but to leak this after a year took real courage

David Seymours stand up in Parliament with reporters today laid things out clearly and not a single reporter defended the situation

Jonno5's avatar

Shame there wasn't a stills photographer plastering that media scrum as David Seymour gave them a well-deserved dressing down. The look on their faces was priceless. They looked like gormless cretins.

Mihaela Soar's avatar

Not presenting both sides is not good journalism. I wonder what has happened before Maiki lost it. I wouldn't call Ani "well informed ": latest article about Hipkins was full of holes.

Hooker Phil's avatar

Oh Dear - Labourites swing into action, bit late my dear, the stable door is well and truely open.

Mihaela Soar's avatar

No Labourites sweetie. Factscbasedc, investigative journalism based on truth not on hearsay and defamatory stuff. Why was Maiki upset? Or re H, how come after 3 years suddenly his ex put a complaint that he didn't give money for apples? He was PM at the time wasn't he? Re his involvement with his finances started after the divorce too..so facts. Plusxwe all know on what side Ani is don't we! And that's why we need proper investigation.,

Gillian Moody's avatar

Ani's report did refer to a possible provocation, and noted that it was denied. She has since received legal letters asking her to delete references to that possible provocation as being defamatory. So it seems there was no "before" in this instance.

Mihaela Soar's avatar

Let's wait for the investigation: the truth always comes out. I wonder who asked her to delete letter re provocation ? That's fishy too: no one starts throwing insults without beign provoked . Not that I agree with anyone using slurs, attacking people and not the issues . Plus drinks in office ? When people are suffering?

Gillian Moody's avatar

Stuff's lawyers asked her to remove "all references to the defamatory allegation" that "Stuff employee, Mr Burr, used a racial slur." They asserted "This allegation is false, categorically denied by Mr Burr, and highly defamatory. There is no credible evidence nor any genuine witnesses to support the claim." You can read their whole letter here: https://aniobrien.substack.com/p/the-media-lawyers-up-the-chilling-effect

I disagree that no one starts throwing insults (or any other harm) without provocation. I wish it were so, but the experience of many victims of bad behaviour by others shows that there are always people willing to cause harm and too often, the only "provocation" is their victim's existance.

Mihaela Soar's avatar

So let's see what investigation would discover. Still : why now? One year after? Why after the report re gangs outnumbered police officers even after patches law. Why now when Luxon saga is developing, with people suffering because of this government Trussonemics and cuts policies and huge tax increases ? And why alcohol was served at Willis office ? Maiki shouldn't have used such word if not herself attacked or insulted. I would use it myself even provoked! But I am not homophobic and I support the Rainbow community, trans people ..unfortunately some small minded people still exist : look at Destiny church, Winston new Bill to define what a woman is ...really!

While distrust of the msm has been a long time coming, the Ardern era and leading up to the covid tyranny times cemented the role of the media in the minds of many of us as the vocal activist voice of the Labour, Green and TPM Parties. I have often commented that the news in the 5 years from 2017 consisted primarily of some variation on the theme "To what extent does the sun shine out of Jacinda's rear end today?". There was not even a pretence of impartiality.

It is no surprise the media protect their own, how else can they devote their time to their only real goal of re-installing a Labour Government? No distractions allowed!

It is hard to take any msm outlet or journalist seriously, the only in depth analysis is always on alternative media. Ani O'Brien and Peter Williams are excellent examples to prove this point

Mihaela Soar's avatar

Covid tyranny? Really? Even after Winston 20 million dollars second Covid Report you are still ignoring that results that stated as a country the Ardern government saved the economy and lives ,acted based on advises from international and our National Advisory committee( Luxon was in it) , Medsafe, virologists and immunologists? Your hate and obsession with it is not healthy.

Ben Waimata's avatar

Yep, when a Govt locks people up for no crime, excludes them from returning to their own country, and forces them to receive unwanted medical interventions at fear of losing their homes and careers then that Govt has moved into tyranny. I appreciate some people like authoritarian Governments but most of us prefer democracy and medical freedom.

Anna Harper's avatar

Plus informed consent based on real scientific data, not scientism and restricted factual information of adverse risks to health and cohesion. People have woken up, sadly too late for some, many people suffering major health consequences now, especially young ones.

Mihaela Soar's avatar

Exactly : so many got brainwashed by some American influencers and Russian farm bots spreading antivaxxer antiscience disinformation. People who refused the vaccine are now suffering from Long Covid : 200000 in Aotearoa NZ have Long Covid and this coalition government refuses to help! Plus it has been discovered that virus stays in brains : dementia, Alzheimer, plus increased myocarditis and pericarditis from the virus . In fact MRna based treatments now are used in cancers .

Anna Harper's avatar

Would not touch mRNA, as I have adverse allergic reaction to PEG (many people do and did suffer vaccine injury). The spike protein stays in the cells, and has been medically researched and proven to diminish the innate immune system. Hence the long covid. Plus we are seeing an explosion of turbo cancers in NZer's, young 20-50yr olds, not to mention other chronic illnesses, all which were ignored (30,000 or them ) by said KC in Phase II Covid report. My niece was vaccine injured, pericarditis! My cousin suffered a stroke post booster. Having had Covid in 2020, knew it was not that serous. Not had it since.

Mihaela Soar's avatar

First the BioNtech Pfizer vaccine doesn't use life virus. Second it doesn't stay in the body. On other hand Covid virus was found in brains , and as I mentioned causes Long Covid. No cancers more than usual in Aotearoa NZ. Lots of bowel cancers due to meat beign full of nitrates, water too. Vaping causing throat and lungs cancers: this coalition has given 1 billion (3 years) tax cuts to tobacco companies. Stroke isn't from a vaccine. Re your niece : she could have had pericarditis if sick with Covid too. Every flu attacks and cause inflammation in the body and could cause myocarditis and pericarditis. Sorry to hear about her ,hope she is fully recovered. I had heart issues after catching Delta : unfortunately I wasn't covered by the vaccine at that time. No one in my family&friends had any issues after having the vaccine. But as I mentioned you could have Novovax, another one of the 4 free vaccines Labour bought for the country. Vaccine doesn't reduces the innate system : that's false.

Ben Waimata's avatar

The spike protein doesn't just stay in the cells, the cells become a spike protein factory. Nothing about that sounds like a good idea to me. It would also be extremely interesting to know the vaccine status of he long covid sufferers. The only long covid sufferers I know personally all had full mRNA shots, but anecdotal evidence is not helpful.

Mihaela Soar's avatar

Again what locks down are you talking about? The lockdowns during Covid? Those were done by all countries fyeducation to save lives from a killer novel virus . Governments from all over the world did it. So no tyranny. All democratic right to be alive and healthy.,

Anna Harper's avatar

Wonder why they all locKed down? I chose a democratic right of informed choice, and am very healthy! Having lived through Sars-1 in HK I was aware of what I needed to do. There were treatments being used successfully by reputable Drs to treat the so called vid in 2020.

Mihaela Soar's avatar

What treatments are you aware off? Only one with good was dexamethazone . But again you risked as catching Covid first variant or Delta wasn't like Omicron. And I could tell you from my experience with Delta , caught it from friends who were perfectly healthy one day and sick next : all of our group were sick. Starts with like a hand gripping your neck, you could feel the pain slowly moving like a metal hand into your brain, heart starts fast beating, fever immediately. And the cough. I was lucky as it was summer so I sat in the sun, went swimming in the sea. It took me month to slowly recover, brain fog, tiredness, headaches, and a visit to ER because of my heart palpitations. The good thing is the vaccine teaches the innate immune system to "clean" virus residues. I do not want to get it again, or RSV, or any other flu. I wear a mask when flying , I follow the Japanese and South Koreans, Singaporean too: it is a form of respect to wear mask to protect others and not spread germs . But they have different education and standards.

Mihaela Soar's avatar

Haven't yiu read about Milano hospitals beign overwhelmed? Doctors having to choose whom to intubate ? Or New York morgues having containers full of dead people ? Even in our country how many died? That's the protocol to stop a highly infectious virus who was killing and killed tens of millions all over the world. We were, toghether with Australia and few other countries fortunate to be kept safe: unfortunately so many conspiracy theories started, QAnon started by 2 Americans living in Philippines as example, Russian farm bots were in overdrive especially after oligarchs were banned from countries after Putin invasion of Ukraine.

Peter, once again a wonderful summation of the lying, hypocritical MSM.

Sherman has been exposed as a lying, racist , screeching homophobic Harridan.

Therefore she has all the attributes that TV1 require for such a senior position of holding politicians to account.

The king hit today was when Michael Laws confirmed that TV1 had been voted year after year as the safest place for the alphabet community to work.

What a load of Bovine Manure !

How could anyone feel safe with this homophobic shrew running through the newsroom screeching “ faggot, faggot “to those she disagrees with ?

Will the Labour appointed board do anything to address this appalling and disgusting behavior ?

Absolutely not, because the odious Sherman is doing their dirty work in destabilizing the government.

I’ll bet the ranch that Sherman will instead receive a promotion plus a massive increase in salary.

Mihaela Soar's avatar

Labour appointed board? That's not true. In fact if Maiki is homophobic or lost it by beign provoked should a result of an investigation by TVNZ. Maiki was n3ver "Labour" appointed. In fact no journalist should be political but should present facts and do investigations based on facts not opinion or click bites like the shock jocks at ZB or Platform.

A Halfling’s View's avatar

Peter - I agree wholeheartedly with your comments. Every so often something comes across the desk that has not been picked up by MSM or otherwise ignored and thus the citizen journos write the story up. I alerted Shayne Currie yesterday morning but he was already onto it and I think his account of Media Insider foirced the others to sit up and take notice. TVOne News reporting was anodyne. But we have come to expect that.

Seymour's comments to media were excellent.

Barry Watkin's avatar

It has been said that what is not reported is usually more significant than what is reported. This TV1 outfit, now exemplified by their ‘Senior Political Reporter’ Maiki Sherman, demonstrates just why so many of us view the mainstream media with suspicion.

That wasn’t always the case.

Knowing public money is involved makes it even more annoying.

I don’t mind the bar being lowered when it’s a limbo game at a party, but it certainly isn’t something our own media should be inflicting on us.

Interestingly Hosking admitted this morning that his show had the story some months ago but ceased to pursue it after they received a Lawyers letter from TVNZ. The sheer arrogance of this publicly owned enterprise has written its future now.

Mihaela Soar's avatar

Is it maybe because it was baseless or resolved? Or maybe because an investigation is beign done ? When lawyers are involved same as the Hipkins and his ex allegations ( proven it seems false, another no story from O'Brien) Hosking understands the implications ( he was fined few times for defamatory falsehoods). What you consider "arrogance " I prefer to call it what it is: proper investigation to get to the bottom of facts. As we've seen with Hipkins . Facts . Not clickbites . Plus who cares now: especially it us rich coming from many who were and are homophobic, anti transpeople .

Aroha's avatar

On the button, Peter.

Hooker Phil's avatar

I noticed, of course, that a few defend Sherman / discredit Ani were well onto it.

Neil Stevenson's avatar

Peter from your comments it seems you were aware of the issue some 12 months ago?

Us uninformed citizens only heard about it yesterday!!

It proves the old adage "It's not what you know but who you know"

Gilbert Dymock's avatar

TV1 News is a perfectly capable media outlet when reporting on road slips or lost trampers but a biased propaganda outfit when it gets into politics. Its knowledge of American political life is not far above kindergarten level and mainly consists of parroting Democratic Party narratives. The local stuff, headed up by Maiki Sherman, is on a par with the international coverage and seems to be a series of "gotcha"-seeking moments interspersed with left-leaning extrapolations of dodgy polling numbers.

For all that, though, I can't take sides with those who want Sherman burnt at the stake. She called Lloyd Burr a faggot. So what? He's a self-confessed homosexual and faggot is a universally used synonym for that orientation. Not a word I'd use myself — shirt lifter, pillow biter, nancy boy and a few others would all come before the Yankee term.

In free speech world, we should all be able to use terms such as faggot with no repercussions at all. Born in 1945, I grew up in such a world. As the son of a builder, I worked on building sites during my high school holidays and when I left school. My father's friends were the guys he employed and other tradesmen; my teenage rugby club mates were apprentices in various trades or labourers. Among those people, the idea that anyone would be punished for calling a spade a spade or a shovel an Irishman's fountain pen never entered our minds. Nobody was upset or alarmed that my mother's go-to epithet for someone she didn't like was "that poofter".

So if Sherman called Burr a faggot then for the first time in years — decades, really — I find myself on the side of a TV1 political reporter.

Believing in free speech means believing all speech is free, even the stuff you don't like. It also means believing it's free no matter who uses it.

Ken Tod's avatar

It's not a 'free speech' issue.

It's an issue about the MSM acting as gatekeepers to what stories they will make public, particularly when it's people from their own cohort, or political class.

TVNZ is a publicly funded organization (with some revenue from advertising) so there is public interest on this coverup by the MSM.

We know that anyone outside their sphere of DEI would have been publicly crucified day after day - but because it's one of their own, the buried the story.

Gilbert Dymock's avatar

I don't see it as a cover up. I see it as a non-story. There's a function where drink is consumed; Sherman calls Burr a faggot, in all likelihood in a jocular, non-threatening way; Willis arrives and hears the expression being used; she goes into panic mode and shuts down the function.

If one reporter calling another reporter a faggot is a story, then every utterance from everyone on the planet is a story.

If there is a story here, it's Willis going into fully woke mode and being offended on behalf of someone who wasn't offended.

You are correct that had anyone outside the MSM's sphere used the word faggot, then they'd have been crucified. But as every schoolkid knows, two wrongs don't make a right. Just because they do it doesn't mean we have to.

Ani O'Brien strikes me as a tattletale, using this occasion to get back at someone she's had differences with in the past.

I'd like to see Maiki Sherman taken down a peg or two. But over this? No way.
