Ryan's performance and any cross promotion of golf in NZ is probably worth more to the country than the whole NZ football teams world cup.
We record The Chase each night and watch during tea...because of that we get the first 3/4 minutes of "the news". It was obvious last night why they led with that, (having the rights) to think it went on for 16 minutes is quite unbelievable. Am I to presume that they managed to fit in a few anti Trump moments as their dear friends stuffed seemed to do with quite a few of their stories, 4 this morning alone.

Last night, after enduring five or six minutes of sobbing Argies and screaming Spaniards, the penny dropped . . . TV1 had broacast the World Cup but The Open was on Sky. And so one of New Zealand's greatest days in sport had, disgracefully, been reduced to little more than a footnote by the national broadcaster.
As for the anti-Trump messaging, your assumption is correct. The moon-faced guy they've got stationed in the States (who could easily be replaced by a pimply kid monitoring the internet in an Auckland studio) managed to slip in a couple of barbs against the President — his contract probably includes a clause requiring a weekly quota of such stings.

In world terms, soccer's World Cup final trumps The Open.
In New Zealand terms, interest in soccer is about on a par with golf.
A Kiwi winning a professional golf tournament trumps a European team beating a South American team in a World Cup final.
Add in the fact that the golf tournament was The Open, arguably the pinnacle of the sport, then the win by Ryan Fox trumps by a magnitude of at least five anything that happened in soccer. And this is leaving out Ryan Fox being the son of an All Black great and the manner of his win — Woodsian in its execution.
Spot on. It's a major, not just any pro tournament. I.e the same as if a NZ tennis player won Wimbledon, Aussie Open etc. That doesn't even also take into account the aggressive ballsy way he approached it to actually win outright too.
This will likely lose them even more watchers, of that I am sure. I only watched last night's tv news to see what coverage Fox's win got and I wasn't in the least bit surprised. It was appalling. Further, the central theme was more about how much money he won, rather than the historic nature of his win. It was disgusting coverage and shamefully disloyal tv.
