The focus of TPM seems to be to openly declare how devastating colonialism and loss of land has been for Maoridom. So they want decolonisation and returns of land. Do they not realise their constant calls of how seriously badly they have been impacted will ring bells for all those expected to yield land and democracy in favour of Maori future prospects? Good luck convincing 80% of the population to relinquish democracy and lose land to settle historical grievances which occurred before any of us were born. Not many people will happily sacrifice their own interests in this generation, and the interests of their families in future generations, to the altar of grievances from others dating back 10 generations or more. Even more so when those expected to yield their lands and positions are not descended from people with any responsibility for any historical injustices.

I suspect the majority of NZ will feel poorly inclined to give up our soverignty and rights to appease the descendants of the perpetrators of the catastrophic Land War period, in which Maori tribal warfare killed as much as 30% of their own Maori population in a frenzy of violence, land theft and slavery. A little honesty from TPM about historical grievances which should be dated back before 1840 to account for this period of time would change the polemic dramatically.

This is the reason that many “Maoris”, like me, will not register on the Maori Roll. As you say, it would potentially increase the number of Maori seats, and it is most likely that they would be won by either Labour or TPM, neither of which I support. So it is better to stay on the General Roll. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that if the seats won by TPM in this fashion exceed their proportion under MMP, they get to keep them under the “overhang” rule.

The right answer, according to Maori like me, is to abolish the Maori seats. As much as the radical Maori resist talking about “blood quantum”, the situation is rapidly getting ridiculous as generations of intermarriage go by. It may be legal, but it is essentially racist. The seats were meant to be gone when MMP came in, but the government “blinked” and we are bearing the consequences.
