Sixty years after the murder and cannibalism of French Captain Marion du Fresne (along with some of his crew) by Ngapuhi warriors, the Maori scribe Eruera Pare Hongi wrote to King William IV of England seeking protection from potential reprisals by the French.

The letter, sent in 1831, clearly refers to the “Maori of Niu Tireni” in the final sentence.

One of our main attributes as NZers is both a blessing and a curse. It's the "She'll be right" attitude. Unfortunately we let things, important things, slide.

To be honest my main issue with this covert name change is exactly that - the covertness. I actually quite like the name and sound of Aotearoa. But I DO NOT LIKE the way it has been slipped in via the back door. And I fear now that if a referendum were held today, that it would be thrown out, on the backlash to that covertness.
