When Mmp Came in the Maori seats were supposed to go as it would create an imbalance in parliament as we have now it was never done and now we have this mess
We're surprised that a commentator of your experience didn't realise the outcome was a foregone conclusion. Thanks for the Electoral details but we were unsurprised at her win even as she looks to be in terrible physical and psychic health she does, we feel represent that section of South Auckland youth in a true sense.
I wouldn't worry too much about misreading the tea leaves. I agree with Gilbert - he was already there so what was the point and the vote effectively would be for a Labour list MP who I gather was Maori but an unknown.
The other more concerning thing is that TPM won so handsomely and the vote breakdown would be interesting. I wonder if voting for TPM is a statement of dissatisfaction with the major parties. It will be interesting if that trend continues into 2026. I doubt TPM would score highly in other than Maori electorates but I wonder in NZ First might see a resurgence.
Labour lost when they put up a sitting member as their candidate. Why would anyone vote for a guy who's already in Parliament? In practical terms, Labour were asking the electorate to vote for the next in line on their list. And who was that? Nobody knows.
Thanks Peter. I think the wave of support from young 'Maori' was always going to favour Ms Kaipara. TPM have pitched themselves so successfully as a bunch of [racist] radicals who are sticking it to the Coloniser Overlords. This will always appeal to the ignorant malcontents who comprise their voter base. They are so deeply entrenched in their victimhood, that any party promising greater benefits to the indolent on the basis of race will do well.
What we also see here is how absurd it is that so few votes can elect a particular [race based] person to Parliament. The Maori Seats are well over-cooked with representation. Of course none of this really speaks to the real issue, namely that these daft seats should have been removed years ago. They are racism, pure & simple.
p.s. Will be interesting to see if Oriini overtakes the likes of Ferris or Waititi as the thickest person to ever grace the Beehive. She made a great start with Jack Tame the other day...
Never forget a none vote can sometimes mean a protest vote. I give Māori credit here, I think the more informed ones showed there contempt for both Parties!
Labour seems to have as no policies (yet) and it seemed as if this by-election campaign was just a case of the two main candidates agreeing with each other.
Possibly that will be Labour's tactic next year - be a small target, not say too much (Albanese style) and try and get in on the Coalition Govts possible poor record - regardless of how it actually is, we know that the MSM with repeat anything critical of National and the others.
