"I know at least one party in the Coalition government is utterly fed up with RNZ’s editorial direction and attitude towards their people... [but] there’s no political appetite for change from other branches of the Coalition."
I think alongside that is the Broadcasting Act forbids ministers from offering any criticism or advice about RNZ's editorial policy. The only ways a govt might change RNZ's stance is by appointing less-partisan board members (which can't easily happen for a while) or by cutting its funding. (Labour lavished $25m on it before it lost office so any cuts would have to be savage to make it worried about its editorial policy.)
You're dead right about the PIJF destroying trust but no prominent journalist or editor will admit that. Fortunately, Jim Grenon makes that link explicit. He asked Michael Wood, as head of E Tu: "Do you believe that editorial independence can be impacted by government grants with conditions?... A classic example of this is the Public Interest Journalism Fund, created under the Labour government when you were a minister, and which required support for a certain interpretation of the Treaty."
Grenon says what many NZers know to be true but our legacy media won't admit.
Right on target Peter, thanks. Journalism continues to find new lows, clearly agenda driven by woke editorial directives. We also need a survey of trust in academics such as your chap Jutel. Or Baker. Or Wiles. Or so very many of the lefty dipshits paraded as ‘expert opinions’ by said lefty media. Heaping bias upon bias ain’t a great recipe for balanced review, that’s for damn sure. Oh, and then we get to the legal profession…. Bunch of goofbag KCs imagining their anti-democracy self-serving opinions matter more than the rest of us. Oh, and let’s not forget the Judges. An activist Supreme Court & many below them making up shit like tikanga as law. Oh & oops, I forgot the Police, currently being taken to task by the FSU for backtracking on their ‘hate speech’ nonsense.
Jeepers! Who can we trust these days???? Apologies for those I’ve forgotten on my list!
So true Boris...the infection runs very deep indeed. I just love this site...https://alumnionline.massey.ac.nz/news/2021-women-of-influence where I was drawn after learning one of it's Women of Influence is bringing a law suit against the NZ Taxpayers for holding that she was instrumental in promoting the "Whale Music to Kauri tree" debacle......What's to be done? I reckon we need a double referendum on Maori seats and The Crown...Let's just become a Republic....we could all be just "The People". Tell me I'm dreaming!
488378 Enjoyed your comment's, my hope is , we can sort all this mess that the country is in out ,the loss of the treatie principles bill has not helped, but there are some good people out there, wanting to fight to save this country NewZealand.
I have purchased some NZME shares and will be going to the AGM in June and speak and vote for and change in the Board. I seen online that Don Brash is doing the same. I hope others will do the same.
I note from the NZX website this morning there has been an on-market purchase of 20 NZME shares for the grand total of $22! I suspect there's some shareholder activism planned for this meeting, probably from both sides of the issue.
While the politicians can't technically remove the broadcasting boards, like you stated, I too are very surprised that encouragement to change haven't been applied in that direction. Coming up to election year the ongoing bias and opinions is going to hurt the current government.
A great summary Peter- all so clear as to why we do not trust media. I am surprised so many trust National Radio. One more example of course is the blatant refusal to cover the realist side of the Climate Debate. More and more peer reviewed science - from all over the world, has debunked the CO2 hypothesis. With the shocking damage " net zero" causes to ecomomies , with NO positive impact on the climate, why do the media remain so truculantly blind?
Only the media can force our Coalition to face these facts. Carbon dioxide and the others - particularly methane, are insubstantial as Greenhouse gases! Sorry. Inconsequential!
What is interesting is the way that MSM is attempting to mould the figures, suggesting that the latest AUT study shows a rise in confidence. Maybe by a few points but compared with the 2020 figures public trust and confidence is still appallingly low.
I would hope that Grenon is successful but after NZME there is still TVNZ and RNZ to be dealt with.
Interesting take from Carl who won't or doesn't want to see the reality that you point out so clearly. Particularly when not just here but in most western countries, it's the same across the board in terms of how the majority of the populace view their mainstream media organizations. Trust in media is at all time low, so low in fact that politicians place higher so that's saying something. Carl can get back to his Jenny May, Melissa Stokes and Simon Dallow love fest knowing full well that they are reading a skewed left wing narrative/ viewpoint wherever it can be applied. Peter, you aren't a conspiracy theorist, you're a well informed, intelligent realist.
Here’s hoping for a Grenon victory in June 3rd. Who knows - in future it might become known as “Media Resurrection Day” and replace Waitingi Day as a public holiday when we’ve also shaken off Waitangi Tribunal survivor guilt?
Thanks for this post, Peter. You might wish to add the media's fixation with the so-called "carbon" and "climate change" panics that successive governments, media, academia and schools have perpetuated through indoctrination!
Is it AI, or is it a wee chink in the Williams grammatical armor, that keeps putting "whose" where "who's" is the order of the day?
Watching events unfold with NZME will be interesting, as with other current events, but as always what we 'see unfolding' depends on which channel we tune in to, so to speak. Not too many, and I'm sure not one, think that MSM is where you tune to get a balanced, informed commentary.
Oh dear, Peter, I didn't realise you were part of the conspiracy theory crowd. I should have seen the signs with your fan-boyish mentions of Tucker Carlson, but this latest posting by you is so very misinformed. I'm out.
Thanks, Peter. Excellent analysis.

And as a result, as long as the media won’t admit blatantly obvious truths many (more?) New Zealanders will keep shouting “King with no Clothes!”.
