Peter I can't see anywhere in your piece where you actually say how many staff your council employs for those 27,00 ratepayers and what the total wage bill is for them. Our council which is somewhat larger has a staff of some 430 and many of those are paid in excess of $200,000 pa. As I understand it our wage/salary bill is some $33 million pa. The staff seem to tell the councillors what to do but also seem to duck any real responsibility.

Thanks for adding to to the wakeup call about the local authority rort, Peter W.

This has been going on for several decades, ever since 2002 when Helen Clark's government amended the Local Government Act 1974:

And so to answer the question “...why have local authorities gone off the rails?

To answer that question, we need to cast our mind back to the reforms introduced by Helen Clark’s Labour Government. Under the guise of enabling local authorities ‘to better serve their communities’, the Local Government Act 1974, which had kept councils focussed on delivering essential services and maintaining infrastructure, was replaced by the all-empowering Local Government Act 2002.

This transformed local authorities from prioritising the basics, to becoming all things to all people with a resulting blow-out in costs..."

This MUST be changed and I had hoped that when Simeon Brown was the minister responsible it might happen under this government... now under another minister... I doubt it'll be changed. Luxon's government (with a few exceptional ministers) tend to leave things as they are.
